Let's say you'd be organising a science fiction/fantasy/horror convention. Pretend you are, this is purely hypotetical. And you'd have some Guests of Honours ready. Let's make them all male. And let's pretend that in order to give your con some sort of aspect of gender equality, you'd want to add a Guest (or two) that are female. Who'd be on top of your list?

And let's continue this game furthermore: say you'd be organising this con in Finland and you'd be advised not to bring back old GoH's. New would be the idea, not necessarily age-wise. And one more thing: in order to keep a well balanced budget, that GoH (or two) would have to be either European or already in Europe for reasonably priced travel expenses.

Now, in this completely hypotetical situation, who would You choose?

I'm now off to Hämeenlinna.

In the completely hypothetical situation I would invite Susanna Clarke. :) Because I'd love to see (in this hypothetical Finnish con) a GoH I'd already know something about (yes, I'm different that way) and who writes fantasy. And tadah, she's conveniently British, ergo, budget-friendly to at least some extent. And hasn't been in Finland before, has she? Oh, and I'd love to interview said hypothetical GoH, too.

Any more hypothetical problems? :)

Susanna has been ill since her last tour. I doubt very much she would be able to do it.

I'm sorry to hear that, because I'd be thrilled to see her as a GoH in a future Finncon. Maybe one day.

What yavannie77 said. And the bit on her original answer about being the interviewer. COnsider yourself "nakitettu" in case the possibility arises.

Ooh, consider the nakki done. :) If the occasion arises. :) (I was, actually, referring to an interview for an article, but I wouldn't mind doing an interview on stage, either. It's been a while since I last did that.)

Let's imagine Juliet Marillier would be holidaying in Europe visiting relatives in Scotland or something like that. My vote would go to her.

Hmm... "would be holidaying in Europe.." Ah! She lives in Australia! I can see the possible problem there.

There is a short and shallow story about Mariellier in the next Spin if I am not totally wrong. So anyone who wonders who she is, is recommended to join TSFS or order that particular issue which will be posted to members of the society next week.
At least I am totally in love with Marillier's historical fantasy fiction but let's see what others think. Read, read, read, people!!!!

Gwyneth Jones, Pat Cadigan, Liz Williams, Lisa Tuttle are a few quick suggestions that jumped into my head.

Gwyneth has been a GoH of Finncon and Lisa was guest as some Jyväskylä SF event few (and then some) years ago. Pat and Liz seem to be getting most nominations, together with Susanna.

Ah ok--sounds good. They'd all be great guests.

How about Steph Swainston? She's a Brit...
